Going abroad

A PhD degree programme at the GSTS includes participating in active research environments, including stays at other, mainly foreign, research institutions for a period of at least three months. The mobility requirement may also be met by combining several shorter visits and/or by stays at research institutions or companies within Denmark. Going abroad gives you the opportunity to make international contacts and gain new perspectives on your research. The main purpose of your stay is to further your research, to experience a different research environment and to network within your field of research. You should consult your Main supervisor for information on the timing and logistics of the stay abroad. Please remember to register your stay abroad in MyPhD.

Please note that there may be different procedures for how travel expenses are settled at the PhD programmes. Please ask your local PhD secretary if you have any questions in this regard - contact information can be found under the GSTS programme page by clicking on your programme.

If the period of a stay abroad is less than three months or more than 12 months, or if you are not able to participate in another active research environment at all, you must apply for an exemption within the final year of your PhD programme. For more information, please see GSTS Rules and Regulations, section 6.1.5 and 6.1.5.1.

When planning your mobility, several matters are important to consider to get on top of the practicalities. To help facilitate the planning process, we have collected important info, links and inspirational stories on this page.
