Robotic Scanning Smarter: Active 3D Vision Enhances Robotic Manufacturing
PhD defence, Thursday 7 August 2025, Leihui Li

During his PhD studies, Leihui Li developed a robotic 3D scanning system to improve efficiency and autonomy in industrial inspection. Combining 3D cameras with robot arms, the system performs fast, marker-free hand-eye calibration and selects the optimal followup viewpoint to maximize scan coverage and overlap, achieving over 90% completeness with fewer views. It also evaluates scan quality and triggers rescans when needed. Validated on multiple robot and camera setups, the system reduces setup time and improves data accuracy, offering a robust solution for smart factories handling complex workpieces.
The PhD study was completed at Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
