One field, Two fates: The Trade-off Between Nitrous Oxide Emissions and Nitrate Leaching

PhD defence, Thursday 30 April 2026, Jingru Yin

Jingru Yin

During her PhD studies, Jingru Yin conducted a two-year field campaign focusing on nitrogen losses through nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and nitrate (NO3-) leaching. These two major loss pathways pose a threat to climate and groundwater quality while reducing nitrogen use efficiency in crop production.

Jingru investigated nitrogen dynamics within an integrated soil–crop–climate system, capturing variability in both space and time. Measurements of soil properties, crop nitrogen uptake, microtopography, and weather conditions were integrated to identify the key drivers of nitrogen loss.

The findings advance system-level understanding of when, where, and why nitrogen losses occur and support the development of more integrated and sustainable nitrogen management strategies under increasing climate challenges.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
