Life as Glacier Ice Algae

PhD defence, Tuesday, December 3rd 2024, Marie Bolander Jensen

Marie Bolander Jensen

During her PhD studies, Marie Bolander Jensen focused her research on dark-pigmented glacier ice algae, living on the Greenland Ice Sheet. The dark pigments contributed to a darkening of the ice surface which in turns results in an increase in ice melt. Marie Bolander Jensen managed to establish a culture of glacier ice algae, which gave an insight into the nutrient requirements of the algae, furthermore, incubation experiments performed in the field on the Greenland Ice Sheet provided an understanding of their adaptive capability to various environmental conditions.

The new research contributed with an established culture that will allow for future laboratory studies to investigate the glacier ice algae more in depth which have until now not been possible.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
