Denmark’s Soil Health: A Nationwide Mapping Journey

PhD defence, Thursday, 21 November 2024, Joan Sebastian Gutierrez Diaz

Joan Sebastian Gutierrez Diaz

During his PhD studies, Joan Sebastián Gutiérrez Díaz researched different approaches to map soil health indicators at a national scale for Denmark. A sustainable future for the growing global population depends on maintaining healthy soil that supports life and productivity. Sebastián studied how machine learning and mechanistic models can be used to map soil health indicators and how these maps might be integrated to offer an overview of the potential threats to soil health in Denmark.

The new research findings contribute to understanding the spatial dimensions of soil health status in Denmark. They provide a baseline for formal soil health assessments and support for evidence-based land management policies.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
