Water erosion risk assessment in agricultural landscapes utilizing UAV sensing and spatially distributed modelling

During his PhD studies, Nils Onnen investigated soil erosion on an annual national level and runoff generation controlled by temporal and spatial changes of soil surface conditions on a plot level. National erosion modelling included explicit consideration of model uncertainty, model calibration and validation. High-resolution UAV imagery was used to monitor the spatial and temporal change of soil surface roughness and vegetation and their effect on runoff and sediment generation.

The calibrated and evaluated national water erosion model resulted in a powerful tool for future mitigation and conservation planning. This study contributes to the understanding of changing soil surface conditions and their effect on the erosion responses variables to improve future erosion modelling approaches.

The PhD study was completed at the Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
