Transport and Transformation of N: N2O and NO3- as Indicators of Subsoil N Removal

PhD defence, Friday 8 October 2021, Kari Anna Wolf

2021.10.08 | Helle Mitzi Thomsen Reichl

Kari Anna Wolf

During her PhD studies, Kari Wolf investigate the role of individual transport and transformation processes in the unsaturated zone and how they interact. In particular, Kari focused on the denitrification and transportation of N in arable landscapes from different perspectives, i.e., following the path of nitrogen used for crop production from field applications to looking critically at the quantification of drainage losses, and finally, an up-scaled assessment on the drivers of N losses to its destination in surface waters, and ultimately to the coastal waters. The new research findings contribute to the understanding of processes affecting the transport and transformation of N at field level, thus benefitting strategies to reduce leaching and methods to quantify N leaching as well as understanding factors controlling leaching on a regional scale.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
