The turnover of nitrogen fertilizers beyond the year of application

PhD defence, Tuesday 30 June 2020. Betina Nørgaard Pedersen.

Betina Nørgaard Pedersen

During his/her PhD studies, Betina Nørgaard Pedersen researched the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizers on plant N uptake, nitrate leaching and mineralization beyond the year of application. Part of the N applied in a given year is not utilized or lost during the first year. Especially for fertilizers like animal manure containing organic N this can have a considerable fertilizer effect in the years after application. On the other hand the turnover of N left in the soil may cause nitrate leaching in the following years.

With this PhD project Betina Nørgaard Pedersen has contributed with quantitative information on the fertilizer effect and nitrate leaching of animal manure in the years following application. Furthermore the availability of mineral N fertilizer in a long term perspective was investigated.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Agroecology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
