Removing pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater – manipulating biofilm communities and degradation behaviors

During his PhD studies, Chuanzhou Liang researched the degradation of pharmaceuticals which are the emerging concern contaminations for the aquatic environment by moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) - a kind of wastewater biofilm technology. Chuanzhou Liang mainly studied how the supply strategies of food modify the microbial communities in the biofilm grown in MBBRs and change the capability of the biofilm to degrade pharmaceuticals.

The findings from this research contribute to understand the mechanisms of biotransformation of trace organic pollutants like pharmaceuticals, and to figure out the relationship between microbial communities and the feedings, and eventually to improve the removal efficiency of pollutants in wastewater treatments.

The PhD degree was completed at the Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
