Are recommendations for indoor sows appropriate for organic sows?

PhD defense, Friday 18 September 2020. Maria Eskildsen.

Maria Eskildsen

During her PhD studies, Maria Eskildsen investigated the energy- and protein intake from grazing and quantified the energy needed for maintenance, maternal retention, mobilization, milk production, thermoregulation and locomotive activity in organic sows. Maria Eskildsen also studied blood, milk and urine from outdoor sows during winter and summer to evaluate whether sows were fed appropriately.

The new research findings contribute to the understanding of the protein- and energy requirements of outdoor sows, which enables development of new feeding strategies with a reduced environmental impact.

The study was financed by Innovation Fund Denmark and Aarhus University and completed in a cooperation between Aarhus University, Vestjyllands Andel, Friland AS and Center for Free Range Animals.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
