Amazing hydrotalcite-based catalysts in oxidation reactions

During her PhD studies, Rongrong Dai researched hydrotalcite-based catalysts for two main reactions: alcohols oxidation and phenol hydroxylation. Those two reactions are fundamental and important reactions in energy transformation and environmental protection. Rongrong Dai designed and synthesized Pd/hydrotalcite and Cu-containing hydrotalcite catalysts. The Pd/hydrotalcite not only has beautiful flower-like morphology but also can elegantly catalyze the reaction under base-free condition. And the Cu-containing hydrotalcite can cascade with dioxygenase to effectively degrade phenol.

The new research findings contribute to enrich the family of hydrotalcite-based catalysts and to present the future of the combination between inorganic catalyst and biocatalyst.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering - Industrial Biotechnology, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Aarhus University.
